Sir Neville Marriner

It is a great privilege for Ponte Cultura to have the legendary conductor Sir Neville Marriner, founder-director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, as our patron, adviser and friend. Sir Neville has conducted every great orchestra in the world, and is without a doubt an icon of the classical music world.

"Of all things to celebrate about Pontecultura, perhaps the most remarkable is the vitality and enthusiasm that Miranda has brought to engage the youth with promising talent for the art of Music in Corsica. The excitement of looking into the future for the arts is provisional on what is made to happen NOW. This is Mirandas expertise and it is a competence I am very happy to endorse."

"It is important for smaller artistic communities to have links with fellow artists abroad and inspiration from beyond their borders. The young organisation PONTE CULTURA, with their warmth and enthusiasm for helping talented artists come to London to further their studies and to perform and exhibit their art, is offering Corsican talents a chance to connect with fresh audiences, make new contacts, and experience a city bursting with inspiration and opportunity.

Since 2010, PONTE CULTURA has been promoting the idea of collaboration and exchange of ideas - British artists and musicians sharing knowledge with Corsicans. The historical link with Pascal Paoli is important to mention. The iconic leader so driven to educate his fellow Corsicans, spent 30 years of his life in London and was originally buried there. The mutual respect between the two islands - Britain and Corsica, creates the foundation on which PONTE CULTURA is building.

Already, young musicians between the ages of 13 and 30 have benefitted from top class teaching by internationally acclaimed artists. Some students subsequently come to London to give recitals, listen to concerts, visit museums; and some to study at musical institutions on the French mainland or in the UK. PONTE CULTURA's pool of artistic contacts will always be there to advise Corsican artists on how to best enjoy cultural London, and the most gifted will be supported financially as far as the Ponte Cultura budget allows.

This year, as with the three previous years, there will be a concert and the end of the masterclass week, including : traditional Corsican music, early and romantic classical music, and jazz, to showcase students and professors, wherever possible playing together. Guest artists from all over Corsica are invited to perform. So far every concert has been full to bursting and received with standing ovations. Local communities respond to young people having worked towards the goal of performing for them. The intensive work ethic the young villagers witness is inspiring and contagious. We will strive to involve local schools as much as possible in the coming years.

Feedback from the students was exceptional last year. It was a rare opportunity for students from North and South Corsica to unite and work alongside musicians from Japan, Italy, Spain, Russia, Argentina, Slovakia and Britain. We are always working on improving : three pianos instead of two, we hope to have more students in gîtes in or close to the village of Vero, and we will have more assistants. This year the masterclasses will also be extended to 10 days.

Our guest professors and private sponsors from Corsica, Paris and London will return home seduced once again by the Ponte Cultura hospitality. Our 'Président d'Honneur' Sir Neville Marriner is undoubtedly one of the most respected icons of the classical music world, and 2014 being Sir Neville's 90th birthday year, it will be a festival especially full of celebration.

We have great ambitions for this project. In time, 'FONDATION PONTE CULTURA' will be established, and a secure, long term and golden island-to-island cultural bridge will be firmly in place.

The 'Communité de la Gravona' have helped us so far, but we mostly rely on the generosity of private individuals. This year (2014) thanks to Sir Neville and Lady Marriner's contact with ROLEX, we received a large enough sum to sponsor two deserving British students to join us in Corsica for intensive lessons. We are also making a broadcast quality film this year and kick starting the visual arts side of the festival with a giant outdoor installation by the church. Conceptual artist Ben Parry from London will work for several days building his structure on site. Without their yearly generosity, and that of our small group of loyal friends/ssponsors, we could not continue this unique and extraordinary project."
